What a cool moment to be able to go back home to Australia and speak about games! I was invited back to Melbourne to talk at GCAP, which ironically was one of the very first game conferences I ever attended (and I wrote about here) before I moved to the U.S. Going to GCAP back in 2012 allowed me to network with a lot of people that helped connect me with studios and developers in America, and kickstarted my ongoing journey now, so I found it fitting and also wanted to give back, by speaking to the next round of attendees that sat in the same spot I was not too long ago.
My talk was mostly focused on how to move over to another country if that is the path that one desires, and detailed my experiences going through the visa process in the U.S. and how that added an extra layer of challenges on top of breaking into the games industry in general (which is already as hard as it is). I’m so grateful to everyone who showed up and supported me, and I hope those who’s questions I answered found the information useful. After GCAP, there was PAX Australia as well, and the entire Melbourne Games Week offered a great opportunity to reconnect with some old familiar faces from the Australian games industry that I hadn’t seen in a while.
